Display: Block.

Tetris, but every block is an HTML tag. Swap the cartridge in the homepage Game Boy to play it.

The Display: Block screen mid-game: a stack of blocks labelled <i>, <b>, <s>, <u> and <a>, two rows flashing as they clear under “display: flex; +300”, with the <template> hold box, the preload preview and a console logging “W3C valid ✓”.

Ready to explore

Step into the game.

It plays right here, on this site.

Play the game

The idea.

A falling-block game inspired by Tetris and by the HTML bricks that stack up when a gallery here is empty. The seven pieces are the seven one-letter HTML tags, and every block on the board is a real tag in the page. Clear a row and it’s clear: both; clear four and it’s !important.

How to play

On the home page, push the Display: Block cartridge into the Game Boy and press Start game. ← and → move, ↑ or X turns, ↓ drops faster, Space drops, C holds a piece for later in <template>, P or Esc pauses. On a phone, the D-pad moves (↑ drops), A turns and B holds.

The jokes

One row is clear: both; two are display: flex; three are display: grid; four at once are !important. Clearing on piece after piece is a cascade, a row holding all seven tags is W3C valid, and an empty board is <body></body>. Each level is an era of the web, from Web 1.0 and <table> layouts to Flexbox, Grid and vibe coding. Stack too high and it’s a stack overflow.

Inspect it

Open your browser’s developer tools on the board: the blocks really are <b>, <i>, <s> and friends.
