Idea graveyard.

Ideas from this site that I dropped, swapped or shelved, and why. Wake one to see what bringing it back would take.

Waking an idea is just for fun. It isn’t a vote, and nothing is saved. Reload and every idea rests again.

Here lie 10 ideas.

  1. The old names

The Lab, Mo’s Lab, Mo’s Playground and Mo’s Arcade. The Lab still haunts the code, in event names and storage keys.

    Cause of death
Superseded by The Thing, a deliberately open-ended name with room to experiment.
    Buried

Recorded in PROJECT-CONTEXT.md (Purpose and identity; Decision record), .impeccable.md (Source of truth)

Wake The old namesLay to rest The old names

    To revive it…

One name in the site config. It was kept configurable so future changes stay simple.

  2. The tab-closing button

A “Don’t press me” button whose surprise was closing your tab.

    Cause of death
Explicitly withdrawn. The button gets friendly surprises only.

Recorded in PROJECT-CONTEXT.md (Decision record), ROADMAP.md (Proposed playful expansion)

Wake The tab-closing buttonLay to rest The tab-closing button

    To revive it…

Breaking the button’s own rules: no tab closing, forced navigation, pop-ups, fake browser errors or lost work.

  3. The Curiosity Machine

An orange pixel creature on an isometric worktable. Visitors could make it Drift, Split, Scatter or Nudge.

    Cause of death
The Bug Cave runner took its place in the homepage hero.

Recorded in DESIGN.md (The Curiosity Machine · previous iteration), PROJECT-CONTEXT.md (Open decisions and discrepancies)

Wake The Curiosity MachineLay to rest The Curiosity Machine

    To revive it…

A decision about where it lives and how it plays. Its code is still in the project, just not on any page.

  4. The six-stomp Bug Cave

Squash one bug, then two, then a three-hit boss. Six stomps scored 3000.

    Cause of death
It had to play like Chrome’s dinosaur game, so it became an endless runner.

Recorded in DESIGN.md (Bug Run · current gameplay), VALIDATION.md (Endless Bug Run · previous build)

Wake The six-stomp Bug CaveLay to rest The six-stomp Bug Cave

    To revive it…

Rebuilding it. The scripted sequence and its tests were replaced by the runner.

  5. A talking character

The recurring pixel character speaking in a synthesized voice made with ElevenLabs.

    Cause of death
The character’s voice is nonverbal 8-bit chatter instead. ElevenLabs is only a maybe for film narration.

Recorded in PROJECT-CONTEXT.md (Decision record), ROADMAP.md (Proposed playful expansion)

Wake A talking characterLay to rest A talking character

    To revive it…

Reversing the voice decision. The character plan rules out spoken synthesis and ElevenLabs.

  6. The orange mouse cursor

A Signal-orange pixel arrow and pointing hand. The files are still named signal-arrow and signal-hand.

    Cause of death
Tried in orange, swapped for Bone white. Same pixels, same hotspots.

Recorded in DESIGN.md (Pixel cursor), PROJECT-CONTEXT.md (Visual identity and precedence)

Wake The orange mouse cursorLay to rest The orange mouse cursor

    To revive it…

Recoloring two cursor files. When the site later got more orange, the pointer explicitly stayed white.

  7. One orange focal point

A rule that Signal orange appears once, as a single focal point.

    Cause of death
The site felt too monochrome. Orange now marks actions, indices, the typing caret and status.

Recorded in PROJECT-CONTEXT.md (Visual identity and precedence), .impeccable.md (Visual direction)

Wake One orange focal pointLay to rest One orange focal point

    To revive it…

    A request for less orange.

  8. Chaos Mode’s target panel

Choose one of five page pieces from a fixed panel, then press Strike.

    Cause of death
Replaced by free play: mine or drop TNT anywhere, from a compact hotbar.

Recorded in DESIGN.md (Free-play Chaos · latest interaction; Super Mustafa Bug Cave and Chaos Mode · first adaptation)

Wake Chaos Mode’s target panelLay to rest Chaos Mode’s target panel

    To revive it…

A reason to rein Chaos in again. Its aim controls already live on in an expandable keyboard panel.

  9. The first-draft lab look

A speculative Portal-style laboratory, with an orbit illustration, a bracket logo and a provisional palette.

    Cause of death
Superseded by the supplied MO — FAKHRII identity, in its Arcade edition.

Recorded in .impeccable.md (Source of truth), DESIGN.md (Web adaptations), PROJECT-CONTEXT.md (Purpose and identity)

Wake The first-draft lab lookLay to rest The first-draft lab look

    To revive it…

Beating the supplied identity, without borrowing Portal’s branding or environments.

  10. The mosarcade domain

Research into a mosarcade domain for the site.

    Cause of death
Obsolete once the-thing.dev was bought and the site went live on Cloudflare Workers.

    Recorded in PROJECT-CONTEXT.md (Decision record)

Wake The mosarcade domainLay to rest The mosarcade domain

    To revive it…

A reason for a second domain. The site already lives at the-thing.dev.
